I lost my parents at the age of 7 and was given a scholarship by Methodist College in Kollupitiya, where I was boarded till I completed my studies. I was an A-grade student and I used to excel at both studies & sports. Despite getting selected to go to university I gave up my higher studies due to financial constraints and started my first job as a call centre officer. While working there I did my law college entrance exam. After this, I applied for a flight attendant post with an international airline and I did get selected. It was during this time that I got into modelling as a hobby. While doing it I waited for my letter of appointment to move to Doha. In the meantime, I went to meet one of my friends at the Capital Maharaja Group. It was at this leading media office that I was spotted by the team of the Balaji Telefilms Group who were visiting Sri Lanka to do a joint project (a remake of a popular Hindi TV series) with Capital Maharaja. I was offered my very first breakthrough in the field of television. Initially, I was a bit hesitant as the industry was completely alien to me. However, I took my very first step in the field of showbiz without any idea of what it had in store for me. I gave up my job as a flight attendant and started my new career with much excitement. My very first TV series was Kindurangana (a remake of the popular Hindi TV series Kasam Se).
Fast forward to 15 years in the industry. Looking back I can only be grateful for my very first break which made me a household name overnight. Ever since I have acted in many teledramas & a few movies. I have endorsed multi-national brands such as Lux, Vaseline, Ponds, Coca-cola, and Nestle to name a few.
In all these years life has been full of ups & downs and staying at the top of the me was never easy. With gratitude, prayer & faith in my ability & capabilities, I kept pushing my boundaries. Today I’m a top celebrity in my country. It seems I have become an inspiration to both young & adult females in my country – helping them to believe in themselves, and to go after what they want, no matter where they come from. Sometimes when a woman walks up to me and shares her story about how I have helped them to change their way of thinking & how I have helped them to become better & win life I feel I have achieved more in my life than when I win awards or achieve any other milestone in my career. Helping these women has been the greatest happiness & reward I have achieved through becoming a star in my country.
I have achieved all the things I hoped & dreamt about & prayed for as an orphan. I am a firm believer in practising gratitude. The reason for my success story is, I believe, that the more blessings that came my way the more I kept thanking the universe.
My next big dream is to conquer the world through my talents & become an inspiration to young women across the globe.
